To whom it may concern

I like you do not conform to the social norm, myself I am a tattooed, pierced, bisexuals, non-op transsexual, sex worker, who’s in to BDSM in fact I could probably go on for hours listing things that make up who I am which do not conform to the “social norm”.  But we don’t want to make this in to a TL;DR post in the first paragraph now do we.

Now I am writing this letter to you all, to ask you to do a simple thing to make a difference to the lives of millions of other people out there.  Every second of every day someone just like you or me who does not conform to the social norm will face some form of bullying or harassment for just being themselves.

Some will be called names, some will be sacked from their job, some will be physically assaulted and yes some will be murdered for it.

We have all these days and events like National coming out day, or International Transgender Awareness day or Pride events and so on.  Which are all made with good intentions, they are all there to help raise awareness of particular issues and problems that certain groups face on a daily basis.  Or to allow people a safe place to express themselves.

But to me this seems wrong, what we need is something more, something bigger.  Something more permanent than 24 hours once every 365 days.

What we need is for everyone one of us to stand up and be counted.  To stand up to those people who think its ok to bully and intimidate people who they consider to be different by showing society that actually this whole idea of normality is well just wrong.

The way to do this, is for all of us to stick our head up above the wall and to proclaim who we are, lets show everyone that there is no such thing as normal.  Let’s make every non-conformist voice heard.  Let’s stop hiding parts of ourselves in the shadows and if people then have the ability to be open about themselves we should see less violence and hostility towards other people like us.

This may sound daunting to a lot of people but as someone who has “come out” to people about a few things in my life.  The whole idea in your head is a lot scarier than it is in reality.  If we all do this, then that teenager sitting in their bedroom feeling alone and scared and confused about who they are should no longer need to feel that way.

By saying a few simple words and announcing our differences to the world we could help save many thousands if not millions of people from years of suffering in silence.  Together we could make the world a better place by just making ourselves more visible and not having to hide away.

So from one massively non-conforming person to the rest of you I ask you to join me in embracing who you are and let’s show the world just how many of us don’t fit in to the neat little boxes they want to place us all in.

 Three Days Grace ~ Pain
Trust me and take my hand

A year ago I tried to convey my feelings on knife play, on what it meant, to me.

Buy Your ticket – Sounds obvious but I’ve been to countless events where people haven’t and witnessed the disappointment of others when they can’t get in. Trust me, you don’t want to miss Sexhibition, you will cry if you do, you also don’t want to pay over the odds to some tout (a personal pet peeve) and start with a bitter taste. Sit down with a brew and have a good look on sexhibitionexpo.co.uk and you can tailor make your experience with amazing workshops and fabulous evening parties too. Then it’s done, no faffing about on the day. Might sound cheesy but we really do want you to have a fantastic time and get the most out of Sexhibition… so in the nicest way possible – just get your ticket.

On the day, be sure to check out the Sexhibition Magazine handed out on arrival for the layout, times of shows and location of your favourite retailers and models as well as workshops you’ve booked onto.

Travel – I get the train for a lot of other events and frequently set an alert reminder on www.thetrainline.com for when the cheaper advance tickets become available. If you’ll be choo chooing into the great city of Manchester I recommend this, can save £’s which you can then spend on new latex/leather/toys etc. at Sexhibition. Win. Also the coach station in Manchester is central. For example, early bird tickets on National Express work out around £10 (I just rang up for you) return from London. What North/South divide?

Book time off work if possible – the main event is Saturday 22nd August so you have plenty of notice to sort leave, babysitter, dog sitter etc. Think about turning it into a weekend away – there’s loads going on in Manchester (just ask Siri or Google) and there are already after parties such as Killing Kittens following on from Sexhibition: After Dark. My guess is there’ll be plenty of others too so give yourself the option.

While I am really lucky Sexhibition is taking place in my home town, I’ve opted to book into a hotel. For a few reasons but one being to make it more of an experience. I love escapism and Sexhibition is definitely going to provide a break from the everyday… Have you seen that lineup? 😉 There’s some fabulous offers through the Sexhibition website whether you be looking for luxury boutique or a comfortable crash pad. I’ll be writing up a review after this of Malmaison Manchester.

Ask your friends – You are going to enjoy this and there’s a good chance you’ll have one of those “Oh I wish I’d asked… to come” moments. It’s got some amazing women behind it and aims to be fun, inclusive and welcoming. I’ve even asked my Mum. There’s a special package offer if you fancy coming along with a group of friends which may take away any nerves about going to something new and just make for a fun, exciting experience.

We can spend days, weeks, months even years trying to define who we are, what we want and where our life is taking us, but how much of this self deliberation is actually necessary and is it more for others than ourselves?

When it comes to sexuality there are so many labels that try to define us that the question of where do we actually fit in is it ever changing, potentially confusing and very stressful to many of us.

Most of us want to find a place in society so feel the need to be able to answer who we are with some profound, inspirational quote or statement that will make the listener understand us in a few simple words.

Is it really possible to explain such a complex, amazing organism as the human being in just a few simple words or sentences?

I think not; we are all individuals, we are all ourselves and we are all different.

Me for example in the worlds need for definition would be labelled as Bisexual. I have had relationships with men and relationships with women and loved strongly and passionately with both. Yet I do not feel though that this word “bisexual” tells you who I am.

People ask me if I identify as a lesbian or a straight woman and there is no easy answer for this. My existence focuses on seeking and fulfilling life goals, my personal aspirations and finding love and happiness but who I want to find that love with is still open for debate.

I am attracted to both men and women and I have found love and sexual satisfaction with both. However when it comes to choosing a lover or partner I do not seek a particular gender. I fall for a person not a man or a woman but a person that makes me feel like I can be myself. Someone to love me as me. It has always been about the person for me and not what is underneath someone’s clothes. If someone stimulates my mind that is more important to me than limiting myself to who I will allow to stimulate my body.

This way of thinking could potentially put me in another bracket altogether. Maybe I am actually pansexual? Do you know what though? I don’t really care to define myself as either. I am me. I am a woman who enjoys sex and relationships and who I choose to conduct these with is surely just mine and my lovers business?

Having been in a relationship with just women for many years there are lot of people that seem to have been more shocked by me expressing an attraction to a man now than there was when I came out as a lesbian 15 years ago. Perhaps it’s more about how people perceive us in their own minds than how we choose to label ourselves?

Heterosexual, straight, homosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, transgender, transsexual, androgynous, bicurious, queer, dyke, faggot, poof, swinger ; does it really matter?

The questions that people ask us about our sexuality, sexual preferences, fetishes or kinks are very diverse and very personal. Some of us are happy to discuss these personal, individual quirks with the world, others are much more keen to keep that side of who they are more contained and not discuss it with all and sundry. Unless someone specifically tells you something about themselves then for all we know that nice couple next door could be swingers, the paperboy could be battling with his attraction to men, the woman in the flower shop has maybe been living with her lesbian lover for longer than all your relationships put together and your plumber could be wearing a sexy bra and knicker set under his boiler suit. Perception, expectations and assumptions can fail us and be the complete opposite to what you imagine so perhaps we need to learn acceptance instead of judgement. Listen instead of gossip and focus on our own desires rather than everyone else’s.

Whoever you are and whoever you love or choose to spend time with or conduct all manner of saucy fun with, remember this is only a very small part of what makes you who you are and defines you as you. In the whole scale of things it isn’t important and should not allow you to be treated any differently by your peers just because of what you care to get up to in the privacy of your own home.

Life is precious and is all about experience and sensation. Grab every experience that you can and embrace every sensation that is available to you. Who wants to live life with regrets? Certainly not me.

To me love and sex is arbitrary. I do not follow a design that I believe the world has in store for me, I follow my heart and I listen to my mind.

Live life to its fullest, love strongly, passionately and without fear and make everyday count.
